Just like every tool from Brownells!(26.07.2009)
I bought this tool while waiting on a more expensive jig. I thought I would give it a try. Wow, was I surprised. I followed the directions in the package and it allowed me to cut my sear to the exact angles I needed.
While I'm waiting on the back ordered tool, this new one maybe my primary sear jig.
works fine just add loctite(16.02.2011)
This works fine as long as you can set the set screw and add locktite mine was not set and didnt have loctite on the set screw
Works quite well(05.04.2011)
Be forewarned that the jig does not come with a sear pin so you'll need to order one, or take one of your pistols and use that one. It would be nice if it came with a pin.
Four stars only for the pin not being included.
Overall great product, works quite well for the novice like me that watched a video and said "I can do that!".
I used it on a new EGW sear and I like the results, also put a secondary angle on that sear. My trigger feels great doesn't reduce the pull weight but the trigger breaks nicely now without a long pull.
Works quite well(07.04.2011)
I used this great product for a new sear install on my 1911 and it seemed to work great and I love the result. Be aware though that this doesn't come with a sear pin, I think it should, so you'll need to order one, have a spare on-hand, or use the one out of your pistol.
You get what you pay for(15.05.2011)
If you are only woking on one pistol and don't plan on doing any other than this would be the way to go, however if you are going to be doing customer guns then spend the money on a Power Custom jig.
1911 Sear Fixture(03.02.2012)
My wife gave me this jig as a Christmas present. Thank you Honey!
By carefully following the instructions I was able to virtually eliminate the creep in the trigger on my first try. I thought surely I would ruin a few sears in the process due to no experience at all. Using this jig and by following the directions I was able to successfully do a triger job right the first time. The overall feel of the trigger after stoning and polishing is smooth, light and crisp. Study the process, take your time and work patiently and you will be rewarded by excellent results.
Broken Back can shoot(12.05.2012)
This was very hard to set up from the set screw adjustment. To holding the sear in place when stoningg it. I should of just ordered the Ed Brown. It is difficult to use. They did not take the time to set the adjutmant screw
Difficult to set up and difficult to use(17.05.2012)
The Brownells 1911 sear jig is hard to set up the adjustment screw to .074 inches. There is no LocTite on the screw and it is hard to get a good messurement. It is also hard to use because of how deep you have to reach into the jig to hold the sear in place. The large .020 inch shim is large and hard to hold in place when stoning the Sear.
One of the few bad apples I've found...(05.07.2013)
I ordered this tool because I had a customer needing a new sear installed - and at the time unfortunately, I was on a very tight budget.. I was stuck between this tool and the Ed Brown version - but had previously outstanding experiences using products the Brownell's puts their name on... The instructions included with tool are... well, "Vague" is a gross understatement! After sticking a sear in it from every conceivable angle, you'll eventually figure out how to obtain the proper stoning surface... Also, the set screw, supposed to be factory set at .074", is NOT set... Good luck trying to properly set this, I just happened to have a .075" feeler gauge that I managed to fit in there and set and lock the screw. Also, this tool doesn't have a setting for stoning the relief angle, it tells you to do it by hand and eyeball. I promptly acquired a Marvell 1911 sear fitting jig, which has slots for both angles, and works wonderfully. This is the first Brownell's brand product that I have purchased (and I have bought a LOT) that wasn't worth keeping.
simple tool(24.01.2014)
The set screw its not set and turns very easily while stoning. I took the set screw out and layed it on it's side and tapped on it with a hammer to slightly flatten the threads. Now it's still adjustable but stays where you set it and don't have to wait for loctite to dry. I added a feeler gauge under the one included to remove just enough from the sear for a good surface in case I needed to change the angle and try again I wouldn't need a new sear. A diagram of the sear in the jig would have been a welcome addition to the instructions. It's not the best tool for the job but it is a good value and does what it needs to.
Excellent for the price.(28.02.2016)
For the price this stoning fixture worked very well. The screw will have to be checked and adjusted for each different sear. Sears from different manufacturers will be slightly different. Just mark the sear surface, hone lightly with a fine stone and check the angle. Adjust as needed. I did two sears in a short time and had a noticeable improvement in both.
The fixture does not have a pin to mount the sear, but this is irrelevant since the sear pin must be removed from the gun anyway.
More illustrations on how to set up and use the fixture would be helpful.
Good Tool (12.08.2017)
I read all the reviews on this tool and decided to purchase this tool anyway. The tool is not hard to use if you have any mechanical ability at all. Every bad review states that there is no pin provided with this tool. Well neither does the Ed Brown tool, you are supposed to use the pin out of your gun on both tools. Other than the chamfers cut on the Ed Brown tool these tool are just about identical. Again anyone with mechanical ability can fix the tool very easily. For the price it was worth it to me I buy tools and need to make every cent count so if I can get a tool that does the same job as a more expensive tool and is cheaper to buy than for me to make that is a good purchase. Only gave 4 stars because I have to make adjustments to the tool for my big fingers.
"PRACTICALLY PERFECT" IN EVERY WAY !!!!!(21.09.2018)
HAVE USED THIS SEAR JIG FOR AT LEAST 25 YEARS & IT HAS NEVER DISAPPOINTED !!! A SEAR PIN IS NOT INCLUDED, BUT....(1) USE THE SEAR PIN FROM YOUR PISTOL (2) USE THE SEAR PIN FROM THE "EXTERNAL HAMMER & SEAR FITTING PIN" KIT (3) SEARCH THROUGH YOUR SMALL PARTS INVENTORY & FIND ONE THAT FITS THE HOLE SNUGLY & DESIGNATE IT FOR THE JIG !!!!!!!
THIS ORIGINAL "TOM WILSON" DESIGN WAS NEVER INTENDED TO BE HELD IN YOUR HAND. IT WAS DESIGNED TO BE SECURELY CLAMPED IN THE PADDED JAWS OF YOUR BENCH OR MACHINIST VISE !!!!!!
.020" SHIM STOCK WON'T BEHAVE ITSELF ??? PLACE A COUPLE OF DROPS OF NON-HARDENING CLEAR SILICONE CAULK OR CLEAR NAIL POLISH ON THE WORKING SIDE OF THE JIG. PLACE THE SHIM STOCK ON TOP, GENTLY CLAMP IN PLACE, & ALLOW TO SIT ABOUT AN HOUR IN A WARM PLACE. MINE HAS NOT MOVED FROM THE JIG IN THE PAST 15 YEARS---DUH !!!!
FINALLY, THIS SEAR JIG IS DESIGNED ONLY FOR THE PURPOSE OF STONING THE "SEAR NOSE PRIMARY ANGLE". IT WAS NEVER INTENDED TO STONE THE "SECONDARY NOSE ANGLE" !!!!!
THE COMPLAINTS POSTED IN SOME REVIEWS, ARE TOTALLY UNWARRANTED. SIMPLY USE THE JIG AS IT WAS DESIGNED TO WORK !!! IT IS VERY WELL MADE, DOES WHAT IT IS SUPPOSED TO DO, & WILL BE AROUND LONG AFTER YOU HAVE PASSED ON---SEMPER FI !!!
