It Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time(09.02.2016)
...so I bought one. I should have thought it through. First, for the cost of this, you can easily buy six 30-round magazines and have three times the capacity. Second, at this price, you're not going to want to just let it drop out of the mag well and hit the ground, much less leave it behind. For LEO or military units, those two might not be issues, but what will be is, third, this takes up more space than two 30-round mags, and is heavier, actually decreasing the amount of ammo you can carry and get to quickly. The headshot for me, however, is the fact that this is extremely difficult to load--mind you, not "load quickly," just "load." Magpul says that the last four rounds may require some extra effort to get in (my paraphrasing); well, the first 56 aren't much fun, either. It took me about 30 minutes to fully load it, and most of the time was NOT taken up with the last four rounds. Three hands would have been helpful, along with massive thumb strength to operate the loading lever. Loading two 30-round mags takes me about five minutes, tops. Then, there's the disassembly required to clean and lube it. There may be those for whom none of this matters; if so, this product is up to the high quality standards that Magpul is known for.
I have a lot of Magpul products and think that they are well made, better than the competition, and worth the money, but, sorry, Magpul: I think that this product is a bad idea executed extremely well.
Great Product!(25.02.2016)
I waited patiently for this D-60 and I will say that it was worth the wait. At first I was a little on the fence because it was rather odd to load, but once you play with it enough it becomes easier to load. Yes, you can only load three rounds at a time before having to ratchet it over but normal mags 10,20's or 30's you can only shove one round at a time into those. Another great feature is that Magpul says it is ok to leave loaded , it will not harm the internals. I found the drum to be very light empty, therefore its like having 60 rounds floating on air because the weight of the drum is a non issue. The only reason I did not give this drum a 5 out of 5 is because it does not work well with stripper clips in order to load quicker, other than that Full Auto Mag dumps have never been better since I got this drum.
Pretty cool(23.03.2016)
Is this a tacti-cool product, yes. Could you buy six 40 round Pmags for the same price, sure. Do you really need it, no. So if for those of you that are going to whine about your buyers remorse afterwards, please spare the rest of us and don't buy this. For the rest of you, this is another well built product from Magpul. I got mine a couple months ago and was surprised that it was much lighter unloaded than I expected. I didn't experience any loading problems but I worked the ratcheting action for a while before I actually loaded it which I suspect helps. When it's loaded it doesn't rattle and in my experience so far it has fed flawlessly in the three different firearms that I've used it in. I should add that it didn't lock the bolt open on my AR pistol bit it did on the two rifles that I used with it. In the end it's a cool toy, I don't regret the choice and maybe, just maybe, someday I'll take it across the pond and I'll use it as my initial contact/break contact mag for my next trip to the sand box
Stay away from this product!(14.06.2016)
Just like everyone else I had a grin from ear to ear when I received this in the mail. That grin faded real fast when I loaded 10 rounds and then followed the instructions to unload the 10 rounds. I could not get the loading lever to release and discovered that the follower did not return to the loading port. After attempting to release the wound up follower with a few shakes, the follower slammed back into the original position and the internal mechanism broke into multiple pieces. Magpul does warn not to do this, but there was no other way. No quality here and I would not trust this mag. First Magpul product to disappoint.
great job magpul(14.06.2016)
this thing works just as designed. yes its a pain to load but if it were loose and rounds rattled people would complain about that. If you like cutting trees with an AR this is the a great tool. i have put 300+ rnds thru mine with no issue other than a sore hand. its a little over priced cool gizmo that draws attention and raises testosterone, and endorphin levels. it makes you grin and load it again.
Well Made Baby Drum(18.06.2016)
Tango Alpha Kilo pretty much summed it up perfectly. I will add that it does NOT fit properly in some lowers such as the Seekins Billet and the Spikes The Jack. Otherwise its what one would expect from Magpul and what one should expect if they are buying a baby drum over a grip of 30rd mags. Overall, its a smile inducing product.
D60 pmag(25.06.2016)
Another quality product from Magpul! A bit pricey, but light, well made and so far has functioned flawlessly. I haven't found this magazine particularly hard to load, even the last 10 rounds. Using the palm of ones hand instead of ones thumb to actuate the ratcheting lever takes most of the effort out of loading up! Looks cool, works well and is great for putting a big grin on the operators face!
Best drum magazine on the market(13.08.2016)
This is the best manufactured drum magazine on the market hands down. I've used beta mags for years and had nothing but issues with the front cover cracking very easily and don't leave them in your car or trunk in high heat the front cover wood warp. This magazine is built like everything else Magpul like a tank. But very light. Had no problems with it functioning in full auto weapons even with 60 round mag dumps fired about twenty-five hundred rounds through the one that I bought just a test the quality of the magazine because of what I said before about the beta mags I've had in the past. Not one malfunction in 2500 rounds most of that fired full auto. The only problem I had with this magazine is after I ordered one I went back to Brownells after testing it to order another one and they were sold out. LOL
Magpul D60 Drum ...Tough as nails! (20.10.2016)
This drum has some interesting features, including the ability to remain loaded for extended periods of time.
In itself, that is a very good thing. However, getting it loaded is time consuming and laboreous.
This is NOT a fast magazine to recharge, but, after you do, it'll be ready when you are.
I tested the D60 with slow, deliberate fire, as well as full auto, with bursts and a full mag dump. Results: IT PASSED!!
The ONLY reason I'm not rating it a 5, is that you have to take your time loading it and devices such as the excellent LULA Loader are useless with this mag.
With that said, it is one tough drum mag that you don't have to worry about if it gets dropped. Besides, buying it from Brownell's adds their "Lifetime Satisfaction Guarantee" to the package.
What's not to like?
Not wort the cost(04.11.2016)
This magazine is much larger than it appeared (at least to me).
It is difficult and time consuming to load and very hard on the fingers.
Pros
It's made by Magpul and appears to be well constructed.
Cons
Very large.
Difficult and time consuming to load.
Not worth the cost.
I agree with one of the other reviews: depending on which 30 round mag. you buy you can get 5 or 6 for what you pay for the D60. The 30 round mags. loads quickly and are easy on the fingers.
I will be returning the D60.
Excellent drum(23.11.2016)
First off this drum is not big or cheaply made neither is it expensive these negative reviews are bogus. It's made by Magpul second it's not expensive I got mine right here at Brownells with a lifetime warranty .third what do you expect when you put 60 rounds in it. It's shorter than a 30 round magazine. I would give it 5 Stars if it wasn't for the loading I'll give it 4.5 Stars. What I found was the easiest way to load it was to get an old water hose cut it and put it around the drum then put it in my vice just barely alittle snug! I then use my left hand to use the loading lever and to push up on the drum into the vice, make sure you stay away from the top loading mechanism on the side . I got loading it down to 6min. At the range put the drum between you and the bench you can control loading it better that way also .3000 rounds no problem loading ! no jams! In semi-auto. I don't know about full auto
Loading(15.02.2017)
Extremely difficult to load, cumbersome and not worth the money. I was able to load 5 standard 30 round Mags in the time it took me to struggle to load 20 rounds in this drum.
A More Detailed Review(29.04.2017)
I read the other reviews before I ordered two of these magazines. The critical reviews complained about the magazine being "too heavy" or "difficult or impossible to fully load."
1. Too Heavy: Two of Brownells metal 30 round magazines weigh a total of 8.1 ounces empty. This magazine weighs 1 pound and 4 ounces empty with the magazine cover removed. This little cover weighs 1/2 ounce. This magazine when full of 60 rounds will weigh 2 pounds and 12.5 ounces. So yes, it is heavier when fully loaded. I personally do not see this as a problem considering the benefits of the extra firepower. Some may find this extra weight helpful in being able to maintain a steady hold on the target.
2. Difficult to impossible to fully load: I think the instruction for loading could be more clear. First, the loading lever is actually a ratchet which must be fully depressed in order to insert each cartridge. The number of "clicks" the ratchet makes will gradually increase as the magazine becomes more full. Initially there may only be 1 or 2 clicks; however starting at about 50 rounds this number of clicks had increased to about 7 or 8 clicking sounds when the lever was fully depressed. Second, with the magazine facing forward, there is a spring loaded flap on the right side of the loading gate. This little flap must be allowed to raise up each time a new round is pressed into the magazine. If you unintentionally restrict the movement of this little flap, you will not be able to load even one round into the magazine. Third, starting at about the 50th round, I wore a pair of leather work gloves so that I could continue to depress the loading lever with my thumb. I was able to load the entire 60 rounds holding the magazine in my hands, depressing the little loading lever fully before each round, and being careful not to restrict the movement of the little flap on the right side.
This is a well made product and according to the instructions it is designed to be left fully loaded all the time without any loss of function or degradation. You just need to know how to load it.
Magpul Drum(13.06.2017)
This is a much better alternative to the Surefire 60 round mags as this one never becomes a salt shaker. It works with every type of ammo I have tried even match bullets loaded to 2.260. Yes its slow to load but its perfect for stages where you need more ammo the normal and don't want to reload.
P-MAG 60RD. AR15 mag(19.06.2017)
Yes this is hard to load from round 50-60 otherwise not that bad to load. I am very happy that I purchased this as it is light weight and looks killer.
Great quality product(14.10.2017)
Finally loaded the 2 drums I bought a while back. I read the other reviews about the loading and decided to give it a try. It went very easy until about round 40 - 45. It became much stiffer and the last 8 or so are hard to do. I tried a rocking motion with the lever while pushing down on the round and that seemed to work best for me. Round 60 just appears in the window as the third one down from the top. I think that someone whose thumb isn't very strong could have trouble loading these drums. I plan on taking to the range soon to see how they perform but suspect that these Magpul products will be the same as all the others I have- Great stuff
A WORKOUT TO LOAD(19.10.2017)
FUNCTIONS GOOD ,LOOKS GOOD ,WELL BUILT , BUT. !! This is so hard to load. Its a WORKOUT to get loaded. I didn't want to use it because after 60 rounds I'd have to load it again.
Plain bad to the bone !!!(07.12.2017)
I use this mainly at the range. I have 3 of them and you can empty these drums in no time flat !!! Just a blast to shoot...no pun intended. A little tough to load when it's new but it eventually loosens up. Works great with the loader, too, making it easier on your hands. I recommend buying 1 for starters just to see how you like it. Happy shooting !!!
Built Very Well(23.12.2017)
If You Have Arthritis In Your Hands This Is Not the mag for you. My hands were killing me after I got this mag loaded but Iâm hoping it gets easier with time and wear. Itâs a very well built item just like most Magpul things are. I was worried about breaking the lever as it required so much torque. What I ended up doing is using two 40 round magpul mags and using the mag link giving me 80 rounds. I have mild arthritis and itâs just to painful for me to load. Wish they made some sort of device to assist in loading the D-60.
Magpul quality all the way. (25.02.2018)
This mag has performed flawless for me thus far...about 1200 rounds and counting...my only complaint is it takes some time to load it.
Ignore Reviews About Difficult Loading(15.04.2018)
These are NOT difficult to load! Yes, there is a slight learning curve. Fortunately there is an easy solution. READ THE DIRECTIONS!
I almost did not buy one of these because of the reviews about being difficult to load. I'm glad I didn't. Heavy for sure, but fun at the range. Saves range time by bringing a couple of these pre-loaded.
Loads on a closed bolt and has proven to be 100% reliable thus far.
NOT hard to load. After a couple times, it's quite easy and intuitive.
Nice Drum Mag(18.07.2018)
Well let me tell you a five year old girl could load this mag. This mag holds 60 shells, that is great.I load and shoot this at the range and off the range.Great for a AR pistol.I do have really bad arthritus, have to take meds for it,but after tis is broke in after 120 rounds it's easy.Seems like this MAGPUL-MAG has seperated the men from the boy's as my dear departed dad would say, no offense ladies get one or a hundred and learn to master this simple Drum-Mag.So roger this. SEMPER-FI
Failure (05.10.2018)
Retaining pin on right side of the feed tower partially backed out during use. The magazine would not drop out of the magazine well and could not be pulled out. I had to remove my upper, use a pin punch and reinstall the pin to remove the magazine from my rifle. I know longer trust this product.
